As you celebrate America’s 250 th birthday, take a few minutes to talk to your friends and family – especially your children and grandchildren – about what it is we’re celebrating. It’s not simply our independence. It’s the one line, right there in the Declaration of Independence, that changed the world. Of course, we all remember the first part: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. But it’s the second part of that line that truly defines America: … That to secure these rights , Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed . The first part correctly states that our rights come from God. But taken together, the foundation of America is: Our rights come from God, not government. Government exists to protect our individual rights. Our government only has power because we, the people, give it our consent – consent that came later, through the ratification of the Constitution. More than anything, that is the foundation of American Greatness. Not only was that revolutionary in 1776, but it also remains revolutionary today. The United States of America is still the only nation built on what the Founders correctly stated to be this self-evident truth. That is why we made it to 250 years – with America reigning as the longest-running, contiguous system of government on the face of the Earth today. On Independence Day, think of what it would mean for our country if all Americans, young and old, truly understood the meaning of that single line in the Declaration of Independence… and then have a conversation about it with someone who needs to hear it. We can never stop fighting for the foundational, revolutionary, and uniquely American principle that the government answers to us, that it only exists because we allow it to, and that it only possesses the powers that we, the people, granted to it.
